Tiwi Islands Take Action: Waste Oil Removal Project

Published on Friday, 14 November 2025 at 10:35:34 AM

The Tiwi Islands Regional Council is proud to share the progress of the Waste Oil Removal Project, a key initiative funded by the Department of Health through the Sustainable Waste Oil Management Project (2025–2027).

This project directly supports the Department of Health’s objectives to:

  • Reduce environmental risks associated with improper waste oil disposal
  • Improve community access to safe and proper waste oil disposal
  • Meet regulatory requirements for responsible waste oil management
  • Promote correct disposal practices across the community
  • Increase awareness of the environmental and health impacts of improper waste oil disposal

Through this support, TIRC has been able to acquire a new IBC Waste Oil Container, which has now reached full capacity. As part of our sustainable management approach, the IBC will be transported off Island, the waste oil disposed of safely in an environmentally sound manner, then the container washed and returned for reuse. This creates a long-term and sustainable waste oil removal cycle for the Tiwi Islands.

Council staff have also completed the preparation of:

  • 40 full 44-gallon drums of waste oil, palletised, strapped, and ready for removal
  • 10 empty drums, cleaned and kept on Island for ongoing Council use

Removing waste oil through controlled and compliant processes helps prevent contamination, safeguards environmental health, and protects our land, sea, and community wellbeing.

This project reflects the hard work and dedication of our waste management and maintenance teams, whose efforts continue to support healthier, cleaner communities while caring for Tiwi Country.

💰 Funding and Support

This project is funded by the Department of Health under the Sustainable Waste Oil Management Project scheme and delivered through TIRC’s local operations and hands-on coordination.
