Tiwi Islands Regional Council (TIRC) attended the Aboriginal Housing and Homelands Conference 2026 in Darwin alongside other Tiwi organisations, Tiwi Land Council (TLC), and Bathurst Island Housing Aboriginal Corporation (BIHA), joining leaders and representatives from across Australia to discuss the future of Aboriginal housing and homelands.

The conference brought together community leaders, housing organisations, government representatives and industry partners from across Australia to discuss the future of housing, homelands and sustainable community development for Aboriginal communities.

With an impressive line-up of keynote speakers, the conference provided valuable discussions around housing, homelands, community development, and the future of sustainable housing solutions for Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory and beyond.

Presentations and discussions focused on important topics including Aboriginal-led design and construction, water security, homelessness, shelter initiatives supporting women and young people, climatically and culturally appropriate housing design, sector strengthening, homelands, and community living areas and town camps.

The conference provided an important opportunity to reflect on the progress being made across the sector while also looking ahead to future opportunities through collaboration, investment and community-led solutions.

TIRC CEO Heidi Dorn said the conference provided valuable ideas around collaboration, community-led decision making, strengthening homelands, and the importance of culturally appropriate housing solutions that support Aboriginal people now and into the future.

It was also a great opportunity to connect, share experiences, and learn from other organisations and communities working towards better outcomes for Aboriginal people.

The conference continued the success of previous gatherings, including the inaugural Aboriginal Housing and Homelands Conference held on Larrakia Country in Garramilla (Darwin) in April 2023.
