New Bridge Ensures Safe Crossing for Milikapiti Preschool Children

Published on Friday, 7 November 2025 at 8:34:37 AM

The Tiwi Islands Regional Council is proud to announce the completion of a new pedestrian bridge at Milikapiti, designed to provide a safe crossing for children attending Milikapiti Preschool.

Due to changes in structure and management, the bridge was 50% complete when works recommenced. The project took two months to complete, resulting in a bright, safe, and durable crossing for our youngest community members.

👷 Works Completed

  • Levelled and secured the bridge structure
  • Repaired and welded all sharp ends of the bridge mesh
  • Constructed and installed new handrails
  • Painted handrails in high-visibility safety yellow

This important community safety project ensures that children and families have a secure and reliable path across the area, particularly during the wet season.

💰 Funding and Contributions

Funding for this project came from the Milikapiti Local Authority, with in-kind support from the Tiwi Islands Regional Council.
The Council contributed existing supplies and labour to help complete the bridge — a great example of collaboration and resourcefulness to benefit the community.
